Cleanse

What makes a Cleanse Different from a Detox?

While there is no defined difference between a detox and a cleanse, it’s generally accepted that cleanses are a more comprehensive form of detoxes. The goal of the cleanse is to detoxify the entire body, going deeper to “scrub away” and remove unwanted substances from the digestive tract. Cleanses use a variety of products including teas and herbal supplements, and also recommend a diet overhaul. Carbohydrates, sugar and salt are reduced while dairy and gluten are eliminated. These substances are believed to pro-inflammatory, which cause bloating and gas, unnecessary weight gain, clogged sinuses, tiredness, feeling sick and foggy headed. By removing these harmful substances, you’ll feel more energized, clear headed and generally feel better.

The Good and the Not So Bad

Think of detoxes as a 7-day program that flushes the body of unwanted materials, and cleanses as a 30-day reset button for the body. During a cleanse, you’ll lose weight. While there may not be a significant amount lost, you will notice it within a few days. Your face and belly will likely become slimmer, your clothes may fit better and feel less bloated.

One drawback for cleanses is that following a regular exercise regimen may be difficult. It is recommended to do less strenuous activities such as yoga, moderate stretching and walking. Performing challenging activities such as weightlifting, long distance running and cycling may be too demanding. Without the extra carbohydrates and sugars the body is accustomed to, you’ll become fatigued easier. During a cleanse the body will begin to pull nutrients from any source available. Effectively extracting all the nutrients from the food, and using it to its full potential.

The great thing about cleanses is that they do not have to follow an actual timeline. You can continue to “cleanse” after the actual cleanse has stopped. By altering your regular diet to emphasize fresh produce, lean meats and “good” carbs such as brown rice, sweet potatoes and quinoa, your body will continue to run near peak performance. And best of all, you’ll feel better, longer while cleansing.
