Open both hot dog buns and flatten slightly with your hands. Spread the outside of each bun with butter, making sure to completely coat the outside. Place the buns on the skillet, butter side down.
Sprinkle ½ cup of shredded cheese over each bun.
Slice each hot dog in half, lengthwise, without cutting all the way through. Place the hot dog, cut side down, on the skillet.
Cook the hot dogs for about 2 minutes then flip and cook the other side for about 2 minutes.
The buns will continue to toast while the hot dogs cook, getting a golden-brown crust, and melting the cheese.
Add the hot dogs to the top of the buns and fold the buns in half. Remove from the heat.
Serve immediately, while still warm, with ketchup and/or mustard on the side for dipping. Enjoy!
