Duunnn Dunnn… Duuuunnnn Duun… Duuunnnnnnnn Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dunnnnnnnnnnn Dunnnn

Do you know what that is?  It’s the JAWS theme song because Shark Week on the Discovery Channel is fast approaching 😊 Shark Week is a week-long celebration from Sunday, July 23 – Sunday, July 30, 2023, and features shark themed programming.  It’s an incredibly popular week among shark enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more.  I don’t participate in the full week, nor do I spend hours upon hours invested in shark programs, but I do like to tune-in from time to time.  There is always something educational or interesting to watch.  This year, I’m going to pair my viewings with some fun, festive snacks!

Here are my Shark Week recipes:

Pretzel Fishing Rods are your basic pretzel rod with Twizzlers Pull ‘N’ Peel licorice used as a fishing line to secure a sour gummy worm as bait.  They are incredibly simple to make and are a fun snack for all those sharks you are trying to lure to your viewing party 😊 It’s a great combination of sweet and salty.

You want to peel apart the licorice until you have individual strands.  Be careful to not break the strands as you pull them apart.  Tie one end of the licorice around a gummy work (or use Swedish Fish) and wrap the other end around a pretzel rod.  You might need to smush the licorice together to hold it in place, but it should be sticky enough to hold on its own.  Repeat until you make as many Fishing Rods as you like.

Use a drinking glass to hold the Fishing Rods upright and serve.  Enjoy your snack!

Sugary Shark Sushi is a JAW-some treat!  See what I did there?  At least I think I’m funny if no one else does 😊 Anyway, this is a candy themes recipe that is a play on traditional sushi.  Replace the rice with Rice Krispie Treats, the seaweed with Fruit Roll Ups, and the fresh fish and/or vegetables with gummy sharks.  They don’t require much effort to assemble and will be a hit!  It’s definitely a sugary treat but any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and will hold up so you can make as many or as few as you like.

The recipe can be found here.

Start by unwrapping the Rice Krispie Treats and cut in half.  I find this easiest and the least time-consuming method.  If you prefer, feel free to make homemade bars and use those instead.  Place one gummy shark on top of each Rice Krispie (or use Swedish Fish).

Slice the Fruit Rolls Ups into strips.  You should get about 5 strips per roll.  Wrap one strip around a Rice Krispie/shark, securing the Fruit Roll Up on the bottom side.  Place seam side down on a serving platter and repeat until all sushi have been assembled.  You can use wax paper underneath each sushi to prevent sticking, if necessary.

Serve and enjoy!

Shark Pudding Cups are a very light and refreshing snack or dessert idea.  They are made with yogurt and Jell-O, topped with graham cracker crumbs to resemble the beach or sand, and a gummy shark (as a reminder of what we’re celebrating here).  They have a wonderful berry flavor (almost like a blue raspberry icee) and a smooth and creamy texture.  I have disposable cups that hold about 8oz and like to use those.  I can get about 6 Pudding Cups.  You can use smaller cups and make more if necessary.

The recipe can be found here.

Start by adding the Jell-O to a large bowl and set it aside.  Bring the water to a boil, pour into the Jell-O, and stir to dissolve.  I honestly boil the water in the microwave because it’s such as small amount and seems easier than heating on the stove.  Keep it simple!

Add the (thawed) Cool Whip and yogurt.  Whisk to combine.

Spoon the mixture into the serving cups, cover, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours to firm up.  You can also refrigerate overnight if you want to prep these ahead of time.  When ready to serve, uncover, top with graham cracker crumbs on one side (kind of looks like a beach), a shark gummy (to terrorize the beach), and an umbrella pick (for decoration).  Serve cold and enjoy!

The recipe can be found here.

I think these are super fun and delicious!  They really are light and fluffy, and not too filling, so you’ll be able to enjoy the other snacks while watching Shark Week!

No Churn Shark Infested Ice Cream is an incredibly rich and creamy ice cream that you can make without any fancy gadgets!  I do think a stand mixer is helpful for the recipe but if you have amazing arm strength and prefer to mix by hand, or want to use a hand mixer, those are also options.  The ice cream has a rich vanilla flavor and is very thick and creamy, almost like a custard, but the flavor is light enough that it doesn’t feel heavy.  Does that make sense?  Since it’s hard for me to explain you might as well give the recipe a try so you can understand exactly what I’m struggling to put into words 😊

The recipe can be found here.

Add the heavy cream and vanilla to the bowl of a stand mixer and whip until stiff peaks form.  Add 4-5 drops of food coloring and continue to whip until well blended.  Add the condensed milk and mix until well combined.  Add additional food coloring and continue to mix until the desired color is reached.  I used 12 drops of food coloring.  If you want a pale blue color, use less, if you want a rich blue color, use more.  Just remember that you can always add more but you can’t take any away so add a few drops at a time, mix, then add more to your liking.

Crumble the graham crackers, add to the mixture, and stir to combine.  This will give you swirls of “sand” in each bite.

Transfer the mixture to a freezer safe bowl or loaf pan, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight to firm up.  When ready to serve, scoop into bowls, garnish with gummy sharks, and enjoy!

The recipe can be found here.

Sit back, relax, and take a giant BITE out these JAW-some treats as you enjoy Shark Week!

Happy Cooking and Happy Shark Week!
